Marble mosaic mural of white lilies on a black ground, set between glass-front cabinets

Artisan mosaic installation

Mosaic takes a prodigy.

Paul installs mosaic as a craft. Waterjet marble murals and hand-placed patterns, set so every piece lands where the design meant it to.

Mosaic work

A mosaic is only as good as the person setting it.

The design can be perfect on paper. On the wall, it comes down to where the first piece goes and how every cut after it is made.

Birds in an arched niche

Blue branches and blossoms climb a pale stone ground, up into the arch and out across the backsplash on both sides. The two birds and every flower had to land clear of the glass shelves and the faucet.

Wisteria, one piece at a time

Small pieces of marble cover the whole wall, with dark branches and white blossoms hanging from the cabinets down to the counter. The pattern carries on unbroken behind the range hood and between the open shelves.

A picture made of stone

Small pieces of marble assembled into one image, set so every petal reads cleanly against the dark ground. A piece out of place shows from across the room.

Flowers that meet at every seam

Each flower is cut by water jet and fitted to its neighbors. The joints have to stay even across the whole wall, around the outlets, the shelf and the cabinet edge.

Why mosaic is its own trade

Most tile jobs are a grid. A mosaic is a picture, and a picture shows every mistake.

  • The layout comes first

The whole design is worked out on the wall before a single piece is set, so the pattern sits centered and the cuts fall at the edges.

  • Every cut is on display

Around an outlet, a window or a cabinet end, a rough cut can't hide. It becomes part of the picture.

  • Grout is a design choice

The color and width of the joint decide whether the pieces read as one image or as rows of small squares.

  • The wall has to be flat

Small pieces follow every bump in the surface behind them. Mosaic needs a flatter wall than ordinary tile does.

What he installs

Mosaic is the specialty. He also sets the floors and stone that go around it.

Mosaic shows the wall behind it more than any other tile. So the part nobody sees afterwards matters most: a flat, solid base and the right setting materials for the room.
